Specialist Glasshouse Tour

The Glasshouses at Floors Castle are considered by many to be the highlight of their visit and their plants attract great interest.  You now have the unique chance to learn more about how we look after them and the work that is done behind the scenes to ensure we have a continual selection of plants throughout the year to dress the Castle rooms.  In particular you will see our Chrysanthemum and Pelargonium houses, our Streptocarpus and Fuchsias plus other tender plants cultivated here by the Garden Team.  Simon will give you a tour of the Glasshouses, highlighting the jobs to do in Spring, and you will also get the opportunity to spend time in the original 1857 Glasshouse which house our fantastic peach trees, figs and grapevines and learn more about their care and maintenance.

Glasshouses are a very important part of many gardens from the smallest cottage garden to the grandest botanical garden.  For many home or amateur gardeners their greenhouse enables them to grow crops through the summer and then overwinter tender exotic plants. No matter the size of the glasshouse the principles are the same and the skills required to grow plants under-glass are much in demand. Plants in a greenhouse are entirely at the mercy of the gardener.  They have to be supplied with every need at the right time and in the right quantity. Accurate regulation of light, heat, fertilizer, and water are of paramount importance if you want your plants to thrive.
