A Guide to Pruning
This class will be a combination of theory and practical demonstrations. Simon will demonstrate how climbing plants and wall shrubs such as Wisteria, Clematis and Hydrangea petiolaris are cared for and will demonstrate how the rambling and climbing Roses here at Floors are pruned and maintained to achieve the swag effect on chains. We will also show you how we care for our Peaches, Vines and espaliered Plum Trees as well as the different pruning and training techniques utilised for our Apple Trees in the Millennium Parterre.

With over 20 years of gardening experience our Head Gardener, Simon McManus has encountered most of the pruning dilemmas faced by gardeners and he will share his knowledge with you at this interactive session.

Simon will demonstrate how climbing plants and wall shrubs such as Wisteria, Clematis and Hydrangea petiolaris are cared for and will demonstrate how the rambling and climbing Roses here at Floors are pruned and maintained to achieve the swag effect on chains. We will also show you how we care for our Peaches, Vines and espaliered Plum Trees as well as the different pruning and training techniques utilised for our Apple Trees in the Millennium Parterre.
We will also discuss and answer any questions regarding the maintenance of Herbaceous Borders to allow you to get your garden ready for the new season in 2026. This is the perfect opportunity to benefit from Simon’s gardening experience and learn new skills in an enjoyable and inspiring setting of the Walled Garden at Floors. Time permitting there will be a tour of the garden and glasshouses at the end of the demonstrations.
